Principle 1: Subject Expression
  • The subject poses on one hand. However, the subject is not overly posed. The expression the subject portrayed captures the meaning of the picture. The subject gracefully poses, which imposes gracefulness onto the photograph.

Principle 2:Obvious main subject, about ¼ to 2/3 of image area.
  • In this photograph the viewer can obviously tell who the main subject is. The main subject is basically the entire picture. The background does not enhance or complete the picture. The picture would still have given the same feelings if the background was not there. The main subject takes up the most photograph and leaves little detail for the background.

Principle 3: Exposure Time
  • In the photo, there is obvious movement seen within the legs and dress of the main subject. The shutter speed chosen enhances the gracefulness that is imposed on the photo, making the dress look as if I was a wave. The shutter could have been a 1/200 sec.
Why did I choose this image?

I chose this image because of the soothing, graceful, and calm feeling it imposed on me. As I viewed the photo in my mind I heard a piano playing slowly and softly. The photo took me to a place of happy memories.

Principal 1: Background Compliments or detracts from composition
  • In this photo the background enhances the picture. The background added expression and meaning to the main subject of the photo. If the background was any other color other than black, it would take from the importance of the main subject.

Principal 2: Is the Image Black or White in Color
  • This photo was taken before colored film. Even though the photographer could only take a black or white photo, the colors work well for this image. The photo is both black and white in certain areas. The black color enhances the white color strengthening the the main subject.

Principal 3: Keep It Simple
  • The composition of this photo is very simple. The photo is still and straightforward. This image has a specific purpose and the photographer makes sure that the viewer can only see what is meant to be seen. There is nothing in this photo, but the main subject.

- I chose this image because the photo is simple. It takes no energy to view this photo and I am kept at a calm state of mine while viewing the photo. The brightness of the white intrigued me but the darkness around it really drew me in.
